The FMTV series is the replacement to the M35 and M44 Series LMTV 2.5 Ton Trucks and the M54, M809 and M939 MTV 5 Ton Trucks of the US Military. The older series were plagued with high maintenance and low operational readiness. FMTV trucks perform local and line haul, unit mobility, unit resupply, and other missions in combat, combat support and combat service support units.
Based on the Stehr 12M18 Truck used by the Austrian Army, the FMTV was first produced by Stewart and Stevenson, then Armor Holdings followed by BAE Systems Land and Armaments. In 2011, Oshkosh Corporation began FMTV production. Changes and Upgrades to the original (A0) design were made over the production period resulting in four name designations, A0 produced from 1996 to 1998. A1 produced from 1999 to 2003. A1R produced from 2004 to 2007 and A1P2 produced from 2008 to present.
The A1 and A1R vehicles incorporated automotive improvements features including a more powerful diesel engine, a better transmission and brakes, added corrosion protection, computerized engine diagnostics, and stronger drive line engine/transmission/differential connection components. Other upgrades in the M1078A1 include more durable seating material and cargo tarpauline, beefier door hinges, and reinforced sections that can be used as footholds to gain access to the cargo area.
Other FMTV designations are the P1 (an A0 vehicle with early add-on armor protection), A1P1 (an A1 vehicle with early add-on armor) and A1P2 (able to be/or equipped with LTAS armor). The full details of each designation can be seen in the FMTV Technical Manual and the M1078 Parts Manual.
The first armored FMTV trucks were fielded in 2003 fitted with the field-upgraded (regular cab upgrade) Radian Armored Crew Kit (RACK) also known as the Crew Protection Kit (CPK). A factory armoring option was then introduced with the Low Signature Armored Cab (LSAC) armor package which could be ordered to replace the standard cab during production. In 2006, the Long-Term Armor Strategy (LTAS) modular armoring solution was developed which uses an "A" (Basic) protection package with "B" kits that can mounted when additional armor is warranted. LTAS is also flexible enough to be fitted with further armor upgrades.
The FMTV is not normally armed, but there is facility to mount a M2HB .50 cal Heavy Machine Gun, 40mm Grenade Launcher, and 5.56mm or 7.62mm machine guns. With a gunner position in the center of the cab.

M142 - High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS)Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV)The M142 HIMARS is a lightweight, air-transportable, wheeled variant of the M270 MLRS tracked vehicle rocket launching system based on the MTV chassis. It will fire any rocket or missile in the MLRS family of munitions [MFOM]. The HIMARS fires either six MLRS rockets or one Army Tactical Missile. The HIMARS launchers have some commonality with its older and heavier tracked cousins, the M270 and M270A1 launcher systems. The HIMARS design concept includes the familiar launcher module, fire control, and digital command and control systems, and a self-reload capability. The HIMARS uses the same command, control, and communications, as well as the same crew, as the MLRS launcher but carries only one rocket or missile pod. It can roll on and off a C–130 transport aircraft and, when carried with a combat load, is ready to operate within 15 minutes of landing. Because of the lighter weight of using one pod rather than two, it has a faster time, compared to the M270, from the point the fire mission is received to the actual munition firing. | |
