2 1/2 Ton 6X6 Truck
The M35 Family of 2.5 Ton Trucks is been commonly known as "deuce and a half". Production started in 1949, and lasted until 1988, with the first delivery to the U.S. Army in 1950. These trucks are still currently active all around the world, utilized by the military and civilians. Due to the availability and durability, the M35 series has many variants which include cargo trucks, dump trucks, tank trucks and wreckers, just to name a few.

Initial production for the M35 was done by REO Motor Car Company. They were first delivered to the U.S. Army in 1950, as a replacement for the GMC CCKW and M135 family cargo trucks. The M34 6-wheel, 2 ½ ton was actually produced first in 1949, but was quickly superseded by the 10- wheel, M35 design. The M36 was a long 10-wheeled variant that featured a 16ft (4.8m) cargo bed, which doubled the standard 8ft (2.4m). The M34/ M35/M36 was designated as G742 by the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps Supply Catalog. The M35 was originally intended for U.S. Army use but has also been utilized by many nations around the world while evolving into a family of specialized vehicles such as cargo trucks, tank trucks, wreckers, gun trucks, vans, “war wagons” and guided missile launchers. The M35s served the U.S. Military well into the late 1990s, with some still used today in active and reserve components across many foreign armies. By the early 1980s, over 150,000 units were produced with production ending in 1988.
The M35 truck series comes in a wide variety of variants and sub-variants. The main variants are the original standard, A1, A2 and A3. The original M35 has a REO Continental OA331 6-cylinder gasoline engine. Most come with a 5 speed transmission but a few of the first produced have a 4 speed. The first A1s have a Continental LDS-427-2 turbo engine with a 4-450 Schwitzer turbo, with the later A1s having a 4D454C Schwitzer turbo and 5th gear is overdrive. The first built A2 trucks have a bigger LD-465-1, naturally aspirated (no turbo or super charger) 478 CID multi fuel engines, while keeping the transmission of the A1s. The later produced A2s were upgraded to LD 465-1C engines with the addition of a turbo charger. In 1994, the A3 variant was announced as part of an Extended Service Program, which lasted until 1999. These units have a new Caterpillar 3116 Diesel engine and the manual transmissions were replaced with automatic transmissions. Along with a redesigned frontal appearance, some other improvements include a new cooling system, reworked axles and transfer case.
The M35 is based off the M44/M45 basic chassis. The truck has no key for the ignition. To start it, put it in neutral and press a few switches. The engine is located in the front, crew cab directly behind and the cargo bed in back. The chassis is 10 wheels across 3 axles with the 2 rear axles holding 4 wheels a piece. The engine is exhausted through an upright pipe along the right side of the crew cab and the fuel tank is placed along the right side under the passenger seat floor. The weight of a M35 is between 13,000lbs (5900kg) and 16,000lbs (7500kg) empty varying on the configuration. Even though the M35 cargo truck is only rated to carry 10,000lbs (4,500 kg) on flat roads and 5,000lbs (2,300 kg) off-road, they have been known to carry twice as much.
M34 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-00-835-8536 The M34 cargo hauler is the first design in the M34/35/36 series, produced by REO Motor Car Company and delivered to the U.S. Army in 1949. This design is a 6-wheeled basic cargo hauler that was short lived and quickly superseded by the M35 10-wheel design.
M35 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-00-835-8464 The M35 cargo hauler was delivered to the U.S. Army in 1949, as an upgraded version of the 6-wheel M34 design. It was produced by REO Motor Car Company. This version is a 10-wheel design with 4 wheels on last the 2 axles. The cargo bed is 8 ft. (2.4m), and has wood stake sides with folding troop seats and canvas cargo cover. Powered by a REO Continental OA331 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 127hp and either a 4 or 5 speed transmission.
M36 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-00-647-0505 The M36 cargo hauler is the same build as M35 except the cargo bed is 16ft (4.8m) long instead of 8ft. (2.4m). Modernized M36 Models:
M35A1 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-00-542-5634 The first upgrade to the M35 is the A1. There are two series of the A1 upgrades, with the first one having a Continental LDS-427-2 turbo engine with a 4-450 Schwitzer turbo. The later version of the A1s have a 4D454C Schwitzer turbo with 130hp. The transmissions were upgraded with 5th gear being overdrive.
M35A2 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-00-077-1617 The A2 variant is the most common. The first built A2 trucks have a bigger LD-465-1, naturally aspirated (no turbo or super charger) 478 CID multi fuel engine with 140hp, while keeping the transmission of the A1s. The later A2s were upgraded to a LD 465-1C engine with the addition of a turbo charger with 210hp. Modernized M35A2 Models:
M35A3 - Cargo TruckNSN w/ winch 2320-01-383-3850 In 1994, the A3 variant was announced as part of an Extended Service Program (ESP), which lasted until 1999. The ESP included the following upgrades:
| |
M49 - Fuel TankerNSN w/ winch 2320-00-835-8341 The M49 is designated as a fuel tanker. The early models have a 1,200-gal (4542L) tank that is composed of 3 units. The front holds 200-gal (757.1L), 400-gal (1514.2L) in the midsection and a baffled 600-gal (2271.2L) unit in the back. The 3 unit design was superseded in later produced units, by 2 baffled 600-gal (2271.2L) units. A delivery pump is fastened to the back unit and is used to fill or empty the tanks. Two sections make up the wiring harness, each with their own protection. The chassis wiring section is insulated against gasoline fumes and the front section is waterproofed. The tanker carries a 35ft (10.7m) 1 ½ in (38.1mm) thick reinforced hose. Modernized M35A2 Models:
M50 - Water TankerNSN w/ winch 2320-00-174-1601 The M50 is designated as a water tank. They come in 2 body styles, one has a rectangle wheel well and the other has a straight body side. Both styles have a 1000-gal (3785.4L) water tank. This variation is still used today as a wildland fighting truck containing a portable water supply and fully operational pump. Modernized M50 Models:
M60 - Wrecker, LightThe M60 is designated as a wrecker, light. The intentions of the wrecker were more for recovery operations, but it was faced with many obstacles due to its weight restriction and was replaced by the 5-ton (4536kg) M816 wrecker, medium. The M60 has a crane located on the back that has the ability to be hydraulically navigated 270° and up to a 45° elevation angle. There are two winches mounted on the frame. The front winch has a capacity of 10,000lbs (4536kg) and the rear winch has a capacity of 15,000lbs (6803.9kg). For stabilization there are two outriggers mounted on either side of the crane platform and a walking beam suspension on the rear axle. Austin-Western is the company that built the cranes for the M60s.
M108 - Wrecker/CraneNSN w/ winch 2320-00-835-8526 The M108 is designated as a wrecker crane. The M108 is used more as a crane along with various other tasks like deploying Lacrosse missiles. Just like the M60, due to the weight restrictions it faced obstacles and was replaced by the 5-ton (4536kg) M246. The M108 design is very similar to the M60 wrecker, light. It has the same boom as the M60, except the M108 does not have a rear winch. The M108 body has arcs above each rear wheel which also separates it from the M60. Austin-Western is the company that built the wrecker cranes for the M108.
M109 - Shop VanNSN w/ winch 2320-00-289-6473 The M109 is designated as the basic shop van model. The M109 consists of a large 12ft (3.7m) van body and has numerous purposes. There have been multiple variants developed to the basic model. The M185 is used as a machine shop with the ability to carry a light duty crane along with tools and can tow a M105 trailer, if needed. The M132 is used as a medical van. The M292 is a longer 17ft (5.2m) van that uses a hydraulic lift gate. A few variants were made into specialized service vehicles designed for the MGM-18 Lacrosse missile system, such as the XM411, for the Ground Guidance Electronic Equipment, and the XM412, with the special tools and test equipment for the guidance system.
