Remove eight locknuts (12), screws (11), and front axle propeller shaft (13) from transfer case
flange (10). Tie propeller shaft (13) aside to provide clearance for transmission (2) removal from
vehicle. Discard locknuts (12).
NOTE
l
The use of shim stock tube in torque converter access hole
prevents converter screw from falling down behind flywheel.
A loose screw may cause a lockup condition, preventing
crankshaft rotation required to remove remaining screws.

Engine crankshaft may be turned using barring tool,

Remove two screws (18), access cover (17), and gasket (16) from flywheel housing (14). Discard
gasket (16).

Using engine barring tool, rotate crankshaft until screw (19) is visible in access hole (21).

Roll shim stock (20) into tube form and size to fit diameter of access hole (21). Insert shim stock (20)
in access hole (21) and position over screw (19) against flywheel (15).

Remove remaining twelve screws (19) from flywheel (15) and converter (22) in the same manner.

Remove four screws (26), lockwashers (25), and clamp (24) from 9, 11, 1, and 3 o’clock positions on
flywheel housing (23) and transmission (2), Discard lockwashers (25).
