b. The length of the pattern
in an unloaded condition
is approximately one-half
to two-thirds of the
tooth of item (32).
NOTE
•Ring gear backlash controls the ring
gear position.
This adjustment moves
the contact pattern along the face
width of the ring gear tooth.
Pinion
position is determined by the size of
the pinion bearing cage shim pack. It
controls contact on the tooth depth of
the ring gear tooth.
•When making adjustments, first adjust
the drive pinion,
then the backlash.
Continue
this
method,
until the
pattern is correct.
•Check ring gear
backlash after each
shim change and adjust if necessary to
maintain the. 0.006 to 0.016 inch for
new ring and pinion gears.
