ENGINE FAILS TO CRANK

MALFUNCTION 1:

Engine will not crank (no response when starter switch is pressed).
PROCEDURE
OBSERVATION
ANALYSIS
(Continued)
Master
switch "ON".
Indicator needle at extreme left position.
Batteries dead.
Cables
disconnected or
corroded.
PROBABLE CAUSE
CORRECTIVE ACTION
(4) Check for loose, broken or corroded cables
and terminals.
Repair or replace as needed.
Refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual.
(5) Recharge/replace batteries or slave-start
engine.
If starter cranks and engine starts,
go to step e.

Low voltage protection module
operating and/or batteries discharged (below
12 volts).
(6) If starter still fails to crank, starter is faulty
and must be replaced (WP 0049, Starter
Motor Replacement) or engine is seized
(Malfunction 2, this work package).
e. Generator defective.
(1) Check generator as follows:

ANALYSIS
Indicator needle in "green" area.
Generator charging normal.
Indicator needle just entering
"yellow" area.
Generator not charging
properly or voltage regulator
faulty.
Indicator needle in "yellow" area
Generator charging slowly
(below normal).
Indicator needle in left side of
"red" area.
Batteries discharging (possible
reversed cable connection).
Start and operate
engine at 1000-1200
rpm.
Indicator needle in right side of
"red" area.
Generator overcharging and
voltage regulator is
malfunctioning.
PROBABLE CAUSE
CORRECTIVE ACTION
(1) Check circuits, switches and connectors.
Refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual.
f.
Electrical starting circuit defective.
(2) Replace starter low voltage protective
module (WP 0050, Low Voltage Starter
Protection Module Replacement).
