1-11. GENERAL (CONT) .
(2)
The M578 Recovery Vehicle i s
capable of long-range, high-speed operatio n
on improved roads. It can traverse rough ter-
rain, muddy and marshy ground, snow or ice ,
and it can ford streams to a depth of 42 in .
(107 cm). The vehicle has: 1) a low, all-
welded steel structure with a turret-mounte d
cab; 2) a suspension lock-out system, and 3)
a spade assembly. The spade assembly pro-
vides a stable platform to increase the liftin g
capabilities of the winch. The suspensio n
lock-out system, boom, winches, cab, an d
spade are hydraulically powered. Power is
supplied by a V-8 diesel engine and a gear-
steer transmission .
b.
Crane .
(1)
Cab.
Is an armor steel weldmen t
which houses the hydraulic reservoir; sup-
ports boom, winches, and controls; and pro -
vides protection for the crew members. Spac e
has been provisioned for radio and intercom-
munication equipment. Doors are provided fo r
access to the cab and stowage compart -
ments. The cab can be traversed a full 36 0
degrees .
(2)
Boom.
Is a box section of steel plat e
which can be raised or lowered by the hy-
draulic cylinders for hoisting operations .
(3)
Boom Winch.
Is a two-speed ,
planetary-geared unit with an internal auto -
matic brake. The winch is hydraulically
powered and has a capacity of 30,000 l b
(13,620 kg) with 5/8-in. (1.6 cm) rope an d
two-part line .
(4)
Tow Winch. Is
a two-speed ,
planetary-geared unit with an internal auto -
matic brake which has the load capacity o f
60,000 lb (27,240 kg) with a 1.0 in .
(2.5-cm) diameter wire cable .
c.
Communications
Equipment.
The
com-
munications equipment installed on the M57 8
Recovery Vehicle consists of a radio set ,
amplifier, power supply, intercommunicatio n
set, and antennas. This equipment allows th e
crew to maintain communication with th e
driver and outside command posts .
d.
Gas-Particulator Unit.
The gas -
particulator unit is used with face masks t o
protect the crew members from toxic gase s
(except carbon monoxide) and extremely dus -
ty conditions. The unit is mounted betwee n
the rigger and crane operator seats in th e
cab .
e .
Turret Traversing System .
(1)
General.
The turret traversin g
system consists of a two-way hydrauli c
motor, hydraulically-released brake, an d
planetary gear drive unit. The direction an d
speed of traversing is controlled by the winc h
operator using a lever on the control panel, or
by using the remote controller when outsid e
the vehicle. When operating the tow winch ,
the level wind traversing system automaticall y
traverses the cab so the wire rope winds
evenly on the winch drum. The winch oper -
ator can override and level wind traversin g
system by using the control lever or th e
remote controller .
(2)
Turret.
The turret is mounted towar d
the rear of the vehicle. The turret can b e
traversed 360 degrees .
(3)
Turret Bearing.
The turret bearing i s
a 4-point contact radial and thrust type bal l
bearing on which the turret is mounted. Th e
bearing is provided with lubrication fittings
and seals to prevent foreign matter fro m
entering the bearing. The bearing inner rac e
contains the ring gear of the traversing fina l
drive .
f.
Electrical Power System .
(1)
Genera/.
Electrical power is provide d
by a 24-volt, 300 ampere generator and fou r
series-parallel connected 12-volt storage bat -
teries. Leads and wiring harnesses distribut e
current to all electrical components .
(2)
Circuit Breakers.
Thermal set, auto -
matic reset, 15 ampere and 20 ampere circui t
breakers protect the vehicle components an d
circuits .
