he -10-1 TMs remind you to eye-
ball the commander’s hatch seal
after every operation.
You know to look for tears, rips,
cuts and separation. You even
know to check for places where the
seal doesn’t spring back after com-
pression. And of course you know
to have a damaged seal replaced.

But do you know how to keep all those
problems from happening in the first place?
Most seal damage comes from dirt, sand,
rocks and other debris that collects on the
lip around the hatch opening. The seal
wears out when it’s constantly pressed
down against that stuff.
Check the hatch opening often and
sweep away any debris that collects there.
Then wipe the lip clean with a damp cloth
to get rid of smaller particles.
