STEERNG GEAR AND PITMAN ARM REMOVAL/REPAlR/INSTALLATION

Install output shaft (5) in housing (2).

Install preformed packing (30).

Install housing cover (4) with eight
lockwashers (31) and screws (32). Tighten
screws to 55 lb-ft (74 N•m).
WARNING
Adhesives, solvents, and sealing compounds can burn
easily, can give off harmful vapors, and are harmful to skin
and clothing. To avoid injury or death, keep away from
open fire and use in well-ventilated area. If adhesive,
solvent, or sealing compound gets on skin or clothing, wash
immediately with soap and water.

Coat threads of two straight fittings (33), two
elbows (34), and one pipe plug (35) with pipe
thread sealing compound and install.

Installation.
CAUTION
Mating surfaces of bracket and steering gear must be free
of paint and oil. If surfaces are not prepared correctly,
steering gear could loosen from bracket causing damage to
bracket and steering gear.
(1)
Install bracket (1) on steering gear (2) with eight
screws (3) and lockwashers (4). Tighten screws to
155 lb-ft (210 N•m).

adhesive, solvent, or sealing compound gets on skin or

Coat threads and underside of nut (5) and
splines of pitman arm (6) with antiseize
compound.
(3)
Aline matchmarks on pitman arm (6) and
steering gear shaft (7).
(4)
Install pitman arm (6) and nut (5). Tighten nut

Install lock screw (8). Tighten screw to 12 to 15

Change 2
to 675 lb-ft (915 N•m).
lb-ft (16 to 20 N•m).
