TORQUE VALUES FOR THREADED FASTENERS
1.
SCOPE
This work package lists standard torque values, as shown in Table 5, and provides general
information for applying torque. Special torque values and tightening sequences are indicated in the
maintenance procedures for applicable components.
2.
GENERAL
a.
Always use the torque values listed in Table 5 when the maintenance procedure does not give
a specific torque value.
b.
Unless otherwise indicated, standard torque tolerance shall be + 10%.
c.
Torque values listed are based on clean, dry threads. Reduce torque by 10% when engine oil is
used as a lubricant. Reduce torque by 20% if new plated capscrews are used.
d.
Capscrews threaded into aluminum may require reductions in torque of 30% or more of Grade 5
capscrew torque. Capscrew threaded into aluminum must also attain two capscrew diameters of
thread engagement.
CAUTION
If replacement capscrews are of higher grade than originally supplied, use
torque specifications for the original. This will prevent equipment damage
due to overtorquing.
3.
TORQUE LIMITS
Table 5 lists dry torque limits, which are used on screws that do not have lubricants
applied to threads. Table 6 lists wet torque limits, which are used on screws that have high pressure lubricants
applied to threads.
