ENGINE SYSTEMS (Continued)
6.
Mechanical System
The mechanical system provides the entire drive train; it is the heart of the engine.
Consisting
of five major components, they are:
Crankshaft assembly
Connecting rod and piston assembly
Cylinder and valves
Camshafts
Accessory drive subsystem
ENGINE COMPONENTS
The following engine components with a brief description of their functions are arranged in
alphabetical order for ease of reference.
Camshaft:
The gear-driven shaft uses cam lobes (eccentrics) to operate the valves via the rocker arms.
Left and right camshaft assemblies are mounted, one per engine bank, on the cylinders and
operate the intake and exhaust valves.
The camshafts are hollow to provide oil passages for
pressure lubrication to the valve parts and to permit deflection when the cylinders fire.
Tubular molded rubber hoses enclose the camshafts between cylinders.
