NOTE

Perform step 1 only if camshaft and gear have been removed.

Remove two screws (1), lockwashers (2), washers (3), thrust plate (4), shims (5), and O-ring (6) from

gearcase cover (7). Discard lockwashers (2).

Using GAA grease to hold gasket (11) in place, position new gasket (11) on engine block (9).

NOTE

Gearcase cover is mounted with screw-assembled washers for late

model engines.

Install gearcase cover (7) on engine block (9) with fifteen washers (16), new lockwashers (17), and

screws (18). Check gearcase cover (7) alignment at engine block (9) with straightedge (10). Tighten

screws (18) 50 lb-ft (61-68 N•m).

Install adjusting link (12) on gearcase cover (7) with new washer (13), lockwasher (14), and screw (15).

Install brace (21) on oil pan (22) and gearcase cover (7) with four washers (19) and screws (20).

Tighten screws (20) 35-40 lb-ft (48-54 N-m).

NOTE

Perform steps 6 through 8 to check camshaft thrust plate.

Remove O-ring (6) and shims (5) and push thrust plate (4) against camshaft (8).

Measure dimension between thrust plate (4) and gearcase cover (7) with feeler gauge, and install

enough shims (5) to provide 0.001-0.005 in. (0.025-0.120 mm) end play.

Install new O-ring (6), new shims (5), and thrust plate (4) on gearcase cover (7) with two new

lockwashers (2), washers (3), and screws (1).

Coat inside of crankshaft flange (25) with engine oil and install on crankshaft (26) with washer (24)

and screw (23). Tighten screw (23) 180-200 lb-ft (244-271 N-m).
