PROCEDURE
NOTE
During normal operation when starter is
cranking, starter protection device should
automatically cut starter off after cranking for
the following period of time:
25 to 35 seconds at 50°F (10°C)
or above.
55 to 65 seconds at 0 to 50°F
(-18 to 10°C).
100 to 140 seconds at 0 to -50°F
(-18 to -45°C).
Starter protection device should reset in 105 to
140 seconds. if starter does not shut off as
indicated or device will not reset, replace
device.
c. If starter cranks for only 1 to 2 seconds, troubleshoot
batteries for low power (para 3-3).
d. If starter cranks longer than listed times, troubleshoot
starter protection circuit (para 3-3).
e. If starter cranks for listed times, wait 1 minute and try
to engage again. If starter operates, troubleshoot starter
protection circuit (para 3-3).
CAUTIO N
Combat override switch should be used only
in an emergency or when tested as in this
step. Excessive use may cause damage to
starter.
NOTE
Combat override switch is found only on
M109A4/M109A5 Howitzers.
