WARNING SUMMARY
WARNING
Exhaust Gases Can Be Deadly
Engine exhaust systems, including
diesel, emit carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless deadly
gas.
CO, when breathed, deprives the body of oxygen.
This gas could
overcome personnel causing illness, brain damage, or death by
suffocation.
Symptoms of CO poisoning are:
•
Dizziness
•
Drowsiness
•
Weakness
•
Loss of muscular control
•
Headache
•
Nausea
•
Reddened skin
If you see another person with CO
poisoning symptoms:
•
Remove the person from the area
•
Do not permit physical exercise
•
Expose the person to open air
•
Keep the person warm
•
Administer artificial respiration if
necessary
•
Seek medical attention immediately
These precautions will ensure personnel safety:
•
Do not operate the vehicle engine in an enclosed area without
adequate ventilation
•
Be alert for exhaust odors
•
Be alert for CO poisoning symptoms (listed above)
•
Note: The field protection mask for NBC (nuclear, biological,
chemical) protection will NOT
protect you from CO poisoning
The best defense against carbon monoxide poisoning is adequate
ventilation.
