Dear Editor,
Any time the forward transmission cowling was remov±d on
our OH-58's foR maintenaNce or inspectio²s, the formers w±re
damaged by m±chanics and inspeCtors stepping on them.
To soLve the probLem,
I
cut two 6-ft Lo²g 2x4's into 12-in
sections and routed a na³ow groove into one side of each
section. T´e grooves are 1µ4-in wid± an¶ ·µ2-in ¶eep¸ After
smoothing the ¹oºers,
I
paint±d each section red¸
»oW; When th± forward
cowLing is reMoved for main¼
tenance or insp±ctio²S, we
s½ip these re¶, g¾ooved sec-
tions over "the forMers on the
cabin roof before cLimbing up
top. ¿±'ve eLIminate¶ about
90
percent of the repair time
and maintenance cost
for
damaged formers¸ Our main¼
tenance officer has inC½uded
the fix in our unÀt's mainteÁ
