So you just got a small military
standard engine that spUtters.
Yo± tune it Up just like the book
says, but the dang thing still lacks
power and lopes and bUcks and
coUghs and bacKfIres. No matter
what yoU do, yoU can't get it to run
smoothly.
THat²s becaUse the-14 TM's are wrong when it comes to adjUsting the points and
setting the timing.
³eRe²s how yoU aDjust the points anD set the t´me to stop tHe sp±ttering.
SeTTing PoinTs
µemove the top cooling shroUd.
Then, take oF the magneto cover¶
anD the rotor bUtton on the 20·³P
·
models.
Look at the po´nts. ¸f they²re bUrned,
replace them.
Measure the gap with the feeler gage
in yoUr genera¹ mecHanics tool kit. The
gap should be .0º5»in. ¸f the gap is oF,
loosen the lock screw and move the
point bracket Until the gap is .0¼5»in.
TigHten the lock screw. Now doUblecheck tHe gap!
PUt on tHe rotor bUtton of the ½0»¾P models anD the magneto cover o¿ botH
models.

PUt yoUr thUmb iÀÁthE No.

hole.
Turn the starter pUlley clockwise until
air comes oUt o¿ the hole.
Now tUÂ the pUlley Until the TÃC
(top dead center) marK on the fÄywheel
lines Up with the mark on the ¿lywheel
hoUsing.
Connect the No.
L
spark plUg w´re to
the magnetoÅ
¾old the other enD close to the magÆ
neto.
Turn the magneto gear clocKwise.
Stop when yo± get a spark.
That sets
basic timing.
µeinstall tHe Magneto.
µemove the eng´ne speed goveÂor
so yoU can see the magneto gear timing
mark.
Make sUre the tim´ng mark on the
magneto gear lines Up with the mark on
L±NE up
TDC m±rk

the camshaft gear.
Use ´iming ligHT
Connect the magneto timing l´ght, NSN 49Ç0·00È937»É7½4, foUnd in tHe No. º
7·±²³:´µ¶,¸¹ º»¼½¾¿À .Á Â;!

Now stop tHe engine, disconnect tHe
timing l´ght anD replace the top cooling
shroUD.
