Brake shield, lower, (2),
echanics, small stones and rocks do a job on
the scraper’s brakes. They work between the
brake drums and shoes. When brakes are
applied, drum linings get damaged.
You can prevent brake problems by
adding shields to each wheel.
Here’s what you need for each axle:
Never
use brake shields when working
in sand, though. Sand gets trapped behind
the shields and wears out the brake shoes
and drums.
You must take off the shields to do the 250-
hour brake inspection on Page 3-387 of TM 5-
3805-248-14&P-3. Be sure to put them back on
when you’re done.
