3-463. REAR AXLE AIR MANIFOLD MAINTENANCE
THIS TASK COVERS:

Two O-rings (Appendix D, Item 488)
TOOLS
Antiseize tape (Appendix C, Item 72)
Sealing compound (Appendix C, Item 66)
General mechanic’s tool kit (Appendix E, Item 1)
EQUIPMENT CONDITION
Rear hub removed (para. 3-461).
a. Removal
1.
Disconnect air line (11) from fitting (12), and remove fitting (12) from air manifold (13).
2.
Remove two screws (8), washers (9), air manifold (13), and O-ring (10) from dust shield (4). Discard
O-ring (10).
3.
Disconnect nut (2) and tube (3) from elbow (1) and dust shield (4).
4.
Remove elbow (1) and O-ring (7) from adapter ring (6). Discard O-ring (7).
5.
Remove adapter ring (6) from spindle (5).
b. Cleaning and Inspection
1.
For general cleaning instructions, refer to para. 2-14.
2.
For general inspection instructions, refer to para. 2-15.
3.
Inspect fitting (12), air manifold (13), tube (3), elbow (1), and adapter ring (6) for stripped threads,
cracks, bends, and excessive wear. Replace parts if damaged.
c. Installation
1.
Apply a thin coat of sealing compound to mating surfaces of spindle (5) and adapter ring (6), and
install adapter ring (6) on spindle (5).
NOTE
Wrap all male threads with antiseize tape before installation.
2.
Install new O-ring (7) and elbow (1) on adapter ring (6).
3.
Insert tube (3) through hole in dust shield (4) and install tube (3) on elbow (1) with nut (2).
4.
Install new O-ring (10) and air manifold (13) on dust shield (4) with two washers (9) and screws (8).
5.
Install fitting (12) on air manifold (13).
6.
Connect air line (11) to fitting (12).
