4-74. TRANSMISSION SHIFT TOWER REPLACEMENT

a. Removal
NOTE
Vehicles equipped with winch will have winch control tower
attached to shift tower. Two screws and washers in step 1 will be
removed from winch control tower.
1.
Remove four screws (4), washers (3), and shift tower (2) from access cover (1).
NOTE
Perform steps 2 through 7 for M939A2 series vehicles,

Remove two screws (5) and washers (6) from bracket (7) and front mount bracket (12).
3.
Remove screw (15) and rear mount bracket (14) from shift tower base (13).
4.
Remove screw (10) and front mount bracket (12) from shift tower base (13).
5.
Remove grommet (11) from front mount bracket (12).
6.
Remove four screws (9), lockwashers (8), shift tower base (13), and gasket (16) from mounting
bracket (17). Discard lockwashers (8) and gasket (16).
7.
Remove seven screws (18), lockwashers (19), and mounting bracket (17) from floor (20). Discard
lockwashers (19).
b. Installation
NOTE
l
Perform steps 1 through 7 for M939A2 series vehicles.
l
Do not tighten screws until transmission shift tower is fully installed.
1.
Install mounting bracket (17) on floor (20) with seven new lockwashers (19) and screws (18).
2.
Install new gasket (16) and shift tower base (13) on mounting bracket (17) with four new
lockwashers (8) and screws (9).
3.
Install grommet (11) on front mount bracket (12).
4.
Install front mount bracket (12) on shift tower base (13) with screw (10). Finger-tighten screw (10).
5.
Install rear mount bracket (14) on shift tower base (13) with screw (16). Finger-tighten screw (16).
6.
Install front mount bracket (12) on bracket (7) with two washers (6) and screws (5). Finger-tighten
screws (5).
7.
Tighten screws (5), (10), and (15).
NOTE
Vehicles equipped with winch will have winch control tower
installed attached to shift tower. Two screws and washers in step 8
will be installed in winch control tower.
8.
Install shift tower (2) on access cover (1) with four washers (3) and screws (4).
