EQUIPMENT CONDITION
•
Parking brake set (TM 9-2320-272-10).
•
Rear wheels chocked (TM 9-2320-272-10).
•
Propeller shaft removed (para. 3-150).
a. Removal
1.
Remove cotter pin (7) and nut (8) from driveshaft (2). Discard cotter pin (7).
2.
Using mechanical puller, remove companion flange (6) from driveshaft (2).
CAUTION
Do not jam any tool between differential and pinion shaft retainer
when removing front bearing cover. Shims will be damaged.
3.
Remove six screws (9), washers (10), cap (4), and gasket (3) from differential carrier (1). Discard
gasket (3).
4.
Remove oil seal (5) from cap (4). Discard oil seal (5).
b. Installation
1.
Apply GM grease to inside diameter of new oil seal (5). Apply sealing compound to outside
diameter of oil seal (5).
2.
Install oil seal (5) in cap (4).
3.
Apply sealing compound to mating surfaces of new gasket (3).
4.
Install gasket (3) and cap (4) on differential carrier (1) with six washers (10) and screws (9). Tighten
screws (9) 24-40 lb-ft (33-54 N•m).
5.
Install companion flange (6) on driveshaft (2) with nut (8). Tighten nut (8) 300-400 lb-ft
(407-542 N•m).
6.
Install new cotter pin (7) through nut (8) and driveshaft (2).
