CAUTION
Keep all clutch parts together. Intermixing forward clutch parts
with any other clutch pack will cause damage to transmission.
10.
Remove five internal-splined clutch plates (1) and five external-tanged clutch plates (2) from
clutch housing (3).
11.
Position clutch housing (3) on arbor press with turbine shaft (6) facing downward.
12.
Position compressor tool on spring retainer (5), apply pressure to spring retainer (5) and using
snapring pliers, remove snapring (4) from clutch housing (3).
13.
Remove spring retainer (5), sixteen springs (7), and piston (8) from clutch housing (3).
14.
Remove outer seal (9) and inner seal (10) from clutch housing (3). Discard seals (9) and (10).
CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Volatile mineral spirits burn easily and fumes can explode. Do not
smoke or allow flames nearby when using volatile mineral spirits.
Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death to personnel.
1. All metallic parts should be cleaned thoroughly with mineral spirits and dried with a lint-free rag.
2. Inspect turbine shaft (6) for scoring in area where seals contact. Replace clutch housing (3) if
turbine shaft (6) is scored.
3.
Inspect internal-splined (1) and external-tanged (2) clutch plates for burrs, scores, galls, breaks,
cracks, and wear. Replace internal-splined (1) or external-tanged (2) clutch plate(s) if burred,
scored, galled,
broken, cracked, or worn.
4.
Place external-tanged clutch plates (2) on clean, level surface. Measure distance from inside
diameter to level surface. Replace external-tanged clutch plate(s) (2) if distance exceeds 0.004 in.
(0.10 mm).
5.
Measure thickness of internal-splined clutch plates (1). Replace internal-splined clutch plate(s) (1) if
thickness is less than 0.071 in. (1.80 mm).
6.
Inspect forward clutch driving hub (12) and forward clutch hub (13) for signs of wear at clutch plate
contact area. Replace forward clutch driving hub (12) or forward clutch hub (13) if worn.
7.
Inspect ball (11) for free movement. Minimum movement should be 0.040 in. (1.02 mm). If
movement is restricted, remove staking and replace ball (11) in clutch housing (3).
8.
Inspect springs (7) for bends, breaks, and wear. Replace spring(s) (7) if bent, broken, or worn.
