POWERTRAIN/STEERING
SECTION II. Transmission
7-4. TRANSMISSION
SLIPPAGE
General Information
When the transmission is slipping, the engine overspeeds relative to vehicle movement.
The procedure below is the only known battlefield expedient that can be performed on
the transmission in less than 2 hours to correct transmission slippage. The transmission
converter pressure must be raised to above 60 psi for transmission to operate. Draining
and replacing transmission oil with OE 30 or OE 50 oil will not correct transmission
slippage caused by pump or disk wear.
Limitations
Potentially short transmission service life.
Personnel/Time Required:
2 soldiers
2 hours
Materials/Tool:
Steel washer; minimum l/2-inch inside diameter, maximum l-inch outside diameter.
Procedural Steps:
NOTE
This procedure will increase the pressure to the
converter approximately 10 psi per washer and raise the
converter pressure above 60 psi. Transmission will not
operate if pressure is below 60 psi.
1. Remove two flat washers from
hydraulic power pack side mount.
Re-install bolts and lock washers
in side mount.
2. Gain access
valve body.
