Nosir-e±e²e! Bird manufacturers use
different engines, transmissions and
gear boxes, so it's impossible t
set
down Uniform leakage limits.
Which is ³hy you'll find leakage
limits in the individual ´ird pubs.
Limits
are
published
in
the
µ
organizational maintenance manuals
for the Kiowa, Co´ra, Chinook and
Huey.
Take the Kiowa, for example: The
hydraulic system, freewheeling unit,
¶
transmission input quill, tail rotor
·
gear box and main rotor hub grips are
covered in Chaps 6, 7 and
8
of TM
5 5-
±520²228³20
(Oct 72). When leakage
1s beyond the maximum limits listed
it's "excessive¸, and the bird should b
´
grounded.
Remem´e¹ that idle birds with dry
seals have been known to leak like a
sieve
when
cranked
up.
Even the
coºtractio» of a cold gear box can give
y¼u leakage. Expansion of a heated
gear box ½ill seal a leak.
So,
mechs
and
tech
inspectors
should use good judgment in d¾ter¿
mining excessive leakageÀespeciAlly
Á where there are no published limits.
