Slave cables and receptacles make
the jumping job easy. But if you're not
careful, they can zap your alTernator±
Some of Those cables are cross-
wired, and the receptacles might be
hooked up wrong, too±
²ake some time to check out the

µirst, checK the receptacles on the
vehiCLe with your multimeter set up
the way it wa¶ to check the batterY
voltage.
²urn on the vehiCle master switch·
Put the positive (red) Lead of the
meter in the positive

terminal of
the receptacLe± Groun¸ the black lead
to the vehicLe frame¹not to the
negative terminal of the receptacle±
If the volºmeter registers, the re»ep¼
tacle is ½nstalle¾ right¿ If notÀ take the red lead out of the

terminal and
put it in ºhe ÁtermiÂaL¿ If you get a reading this º½me, the leads are crossed in the
receÃtacÄeÅ ²urn off the master switch and disconNecT the battery± Remove the
receÃtaCLe and change the power leads around±

Élack leaÍ to a ground on the veHicle± It
shoUlÍ reaÍ tHe veÓicÒeÌs voltage±
If Ðou get no reaÍing, try tHe reÍ
leaÍ on the negative post of the caÉle±
If you get a reaÍing There, reverse the
leaÍs on one end of The caÉle± If you
still donÌt get a reaÍiÔg, tHe caÕle is
ÍÖfecTiVe±
