IN the field± your job is to get the wire
dowN aNd keep thE liNes opeN. That
mEans keeping the wire out of the way
of man aNd machine.
µverhea» is one way. A lance pole
or wire haNger does the trick. So will
a handy limb or two when you can fiNd
thEm.
An ea¼y way to sling the wire over
tall branches is to tie something
heavy½like a discar»ed howitzer pro¾
jectile nose plug¿to one eNd.

Look the wire over closely as you pÊt
it back oN rEels. Look fOr cuts± splices±
worn spots or iNsulation damage.
If a bad spot covers less than 3 iNË
ches of wire± tape it. LoNger ones have
to be splice».
Put your recovered wire to the test

Íse a multimeter to check fOr loop
resistancÎ. Goo» wire will show about
212 ohms per mile at ÏаÃ. RememË
ber that temperature a³Ñects resistance
aNd resistance chaNges proportionateÒ
ly with length. Thus± a half¸mile of wire
would test out at 106 ohms at ÏаF.

A coNsiderably higher than normal
reading mEaNs bad splices or a

in the wire. Too low indicates a leak
or short circuit.
If it passEs the resistance test± but has
more thaN 4 splices pEr halfÔmile± itÇs
good oNly fOr traiNiNg. Õf it Öil¼ the
splice test± save what yoÊ can± and turN
iN the rest. Check with your support ²r
the procedure.
When you buN»le it up± ²rget abo×t
cuttiNg it into strips. ItÇs usÊally uNË
nEcessary and always daNgerous. Pص
