Dear Editor,
We don't have a micrometer to measure bolt-hole wear in the
tailboom attachment fittings of our Cobras. Micrometers aren't
included in our
A
VUM tool kits, so we always had to scrounge
one from suppoR±when we could.
Then we Got
A
VIM to make us a simple ²O±NO ²9 tool to
measure bolt holes. It's made Fo³ solid 31-inch diAmeter
aluminum stock 3 to 4 inches long and coated with Alodine
chemical ´Lm, NSN 8030-00-057-2354, to make it coµosion
resistant.

One end of the stock is machined to 0.506-in diameter±the
same diameter of the bolts. The other end is machined to
0.5¶6-inch±the maximum diameter permitted fo· the b¸lt hol¹s.
To use the gage, we put the smAller end into the bolt holeº If
it's
not
sloppy, the hole's OK. If it
sloppy, we tu» the tool
around And t¼ th¹ big end. If it ½its, too, the structural panels hAve
to be repaired or replaced.
