Some M9 I 5A I tractor trucks are rUnning aroUnd oUt there with a bUm
cooling f±n clutch.
On several, the clUtch won't engage. The engine doesn't get the cooling it
needs and overheats.
On others, the clUtch stays engaged all the time. That wastes engine power
and the engine runs too cool.
There are no instrUctions on checking the serviceability of the clUtch in
yoUr -20 ²M, so here³s how yoU mechanics can check the clUtch dUring each
semiannual service.
BEG´N W´TH THE ENGµNE oFf and the air ta¶ks empty. That way the
clUtch will be fUlly engaged.
MEAS·RE THE SPACE bet¸een the edge of the pressUre plate and the
pulley face to find the thickness of the pressUre plate li¶ing. The measUre¹
ment shoUld be bet¸een I/ 8 and 3/ 8 inch. Replace the clUtch if the sºpace is
less than »/ 8 inch.

pressUre plate ¿earing or the sliding
piston.
µf the clUtch needs workÅ replace it and send it to ÆS for repair. They have
instÇuctions for rebUilding the assembly in Para 3-18 of ²M 9-2320Ä283-34-1.
