What does maintenance mean to the
average soldieR? It means going to the
motor pool to woRk.
What kind of
work?
That
depends
on
who's
in
charge.
A
strong
maintenance
NCO
will
make you get ±he

Technical Manu-
p
al. You tu² to ±he part about PReven³
tive Maintenance Checks and SeRvices
(PMCS) and yoU do the things the
checklist taBle tells you ±o do. After
that's done, yoU can leave ±he mo±oR
pool´ µight? WRong! Wrong! Wrong!
Even with good NCO's in chaRge,
we have been sa±isFied in the past with
a maintenance progRam that's allowed
too much defeRRed maintenance. This
has been covered, in pa¶t, by a misUn·
deRstanding
of
-10/±20
PMCS stan¸
dards. OuR weapons may look good,
but ±hey're BReaking down moRe than
they shoUld. They're going ±o we¹r oUt
befºre they should. And ±hey'Re not
ready to »ace a potential enemy.
That's ±he Reason why we've got to
maintain
to
the
-²0/-20
sta¼d¹Rds.
That's the only standaRd ±hat's good

But What Does
"Good Enough± Mean?
¾very piece of equipment in your
mo±or pool is a li±tle bit di¿eRent.
Tanks may look the same, but each
has little pecUliaRities that makes it dif³
Àrent.
That's why each tank, each tRUck,
each aÁillery piece needs a special pair
of eyes looking at i±. These special eyes
have got to be trained to see what's
ÂÃ below ±he suRface, not just the paint
job on ±he oUtside.
Äut,
we've
been
passing inspec³
tions! What's ±he pRoblem?
The truth is ouR deFinition of good
maintenance has been a little ÅÆzzy.
The deÇnition depended on who was
in charge. WHat you ±hought was good
maintenÈnce didn'± satisfy youR main³
tenance ±ech in the ÄMO shop. What
he
thoUght
was
good
maintenance
didn't satisfy ±he instructor Éom the
MAÊT team or the inspectoR Éom ±he
IG oËce. And what aboUt when you
tUÌed in a Vehicle? You pRac±ically
had to make it liKe new befºRe ±he in³
spectoRs would accept it.
So wheRe does it stop? Íha± is "good
mÎintenanceÏ?
