EQUIPMENT CONDITION

l Front gear cover removed (para. 3-33).

l Cam follower housing removed (para. 3-41).

a. Camshaft Gear Backlash Measurement

Attach dial indicator to cylinder block (1). Ensure plunger is resting on tooth of camshaft gear (2).

Rotate camshaft gear (2) clockwise as far as possible without crankshaft gear (3) turning.

Set dial indicator to zero.

Rotate camshaft gear (2) counterclockwise as far as possible without crankshaft gear (3) turning.

Read backlash measurement. Replace camshaft gear (2) (subtask c.) if backlash is greater than

0.020 in. (0.51 mm).

Remove dial indicator from cylinder block (1).
