NOTE
Shims (1) are used to set pressure relief valve. The
number of shims may differ from pump to pump. Some
pumps may have no shims.
Save all shims in new parts
kit, even if pump you are working on had no shims.
Shims will be used later for pump test and adjustment.
Relief valve spring (2) and plunger (3) come in a parts
kit. The kit also has a new retaining pin (4), one of
two types of spring retainer (5), and shims (1). If any
of these parts are damaged, all should be changed. If
kit has two plungers, the longer one is for this pump.
Some early model oil pumps used washer (6) instead of one of two types of
spring retainer (5) to hold in relief valve plunger (3) and spring (2). If
working on pump with washer, threw away washer and get a parts kit
with new spring retainer, retaining pin (4), plunger, spring, and shims (1).
WARNING
Dry cleaning solvent is flammable. Do not use near
an open flame. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when
solvent is used. Use only in well-ventilated places.
Failure to do this may result in injury to personnel
and damage to equipment.
Check that spring retainer (5), spring (2), and plunger (3) have no
cracks or burrs.
Fix small burrs with a fine mill file or crocus cloth
dipped in dry cleaning solvent.
If spring retainer (5), spring (2) or plunger (3) are cracked or badly
damaged, throw away spring retainer, spring, plunger, retaining pin (4),
and shims (1) and get new ones.
