A weak battery can freeze into
a block of ice. A fully charged bat-
tery will take coLd down to
-90 °F.
This's because the electrolyte (bat±
tery acid) in a Fully charged battery
is aboUt one²quarter sulfuric acid.
As a battery discharges, the elec-
trOlyte becomes less acid and more
water. Charging returns the elec-
trOlyte to the right balance of acid
and Water. This's part of the
"chemical energy³ that turns into
electrical energy when you hit the
starter switch.

There's no magic sUbstance to

freezing when the mercury takes a
plunge. The onLy way to keep bat±
teries from freeziNg is to keep them
charged.
A measure oµ battery charge is
the specific Gravity. The higher the
specifIc gravity, the highEr the
charge; the higher the charge, the
lower the Freeze point.

Batteries don't have as much
power when it's cold. ¶t the same
time, your gear takes More power to
get it started. ·f the temperature is
low, it won't take much cranKing to
discharge the battery eNough to
freeze.
Head off this problem by keeping
your gear in good shape so it'¸ start
quick. ·f you run the batteries down
trying to get started, take them in-
side and keep them warm if you
can.
Your batteries may also discharge
