The manifld aIr pReheater on some
dIeseL and muLtIFel engInes he±ps start
those bIg engInes In co±d weather-
320² or below. But you shoU±dn't use
It fr quIck stArts when temPerature's
above 3 2°². Or to prIme a hard³stArtIng
engIne when somethIng e±se Is wrong.
That buMs uP the g±ow pLug In the
preheater. ´hen when you need It, the
preheater wI±L staL± Instead oµ heLp start
the engIne.
How preheaters Work
´he preheater system has a Fel
pump-eIther hand operated or e±ectrI¶
cal-that pumPs FeL Into the Intake
manIµ·Ld. ¸t a±so has an eLectrIcaL g±ow
pLug or spark pLug, and a swItch to

on the g±ow/sPark pLug.
The Fe± pump sprays atomIzed ¹ue±
Into the manIµ·±d. ´he Fe± Is IgnIted by
the pLug and buMs to heat the Intake aIr.
ºsIng the preheater In wArm weather
damages the eLectrIca± components and
±eads to a bu»ed¼out Preheater .

.. or a deµEctIve swItch.
Wen these go bad, the ¹½eL does not
IgnIte when you tu¾ on the preheater.
¿aw µueL gets In the cylInders and
makes the engIne hard to stArt, and can
cause hydrostatIc Lock.
The same thIng can h1ppen Iµ you
pUmp FeL Into the manIµ·Ld befre
tuÀINg on the preheater. ´he g±ow
p±Ug gets wet, and thÁt keePs It Âom
g
ettIng hot enough to IgnIte the Fe±.
´hIs can happen on vehIc±es LIke the
Ã8Ä9ÅserIes 5¼ton trucks, the
ßßà
²5Ä7Ä 2ÄÆton dump.

Some drIvers tuM on the cold start

they frget to tuM o¹µ the coLd staÇt
swItch aµter the vehIc±e stArts.
´hIs can happen on trucks wItH tHe
hand PrImer pumpÈthe Ã8Ä9's and
the ²5Ä7Ä 2ļton dUmp. The g±ow pLug
draIns the trUck's batterIes or bUMs out
the g±ow P±ug coI± Iµ It's ±eµt on too
Long.

For trucks with ±he hand primer
pump, give the pump only
