3-226. STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT

EQUIPMENT CONDITION
General mechanic’s tool kit (Appendix E, Item 1)
Parking brake set (TM 9-2320-272-10).
Torque wrench (Appendix E, Item 144)
Wheels straight (TM 9-2320-272-10).
Puller (Appendix E, Item 110)
Horn switch removed (para. 3-104).
1.
Loosen clamp (6) and slide turn signal control (8) down steering column (7).
NOTE
Perform step 2 only if vehicle is equipped with hand airbrake
control lever.
2.
Loosen two screws (5) and slide hand airbrake control lever (4) down steering column (7).
3.
Loosen nut (2) until flush with top of steering wheel shaft (3).
4.
Install two adapters (14) and (13) on steering column (7) and steering wheel shaft (3).
5.
Install puller on adapters (14) and (13) and tighten puller screw until steering wheel (1) is loose.
6.
Remove puller, nut (2), two adapters (14) and (13), and steering wheel (1) from steering column (7).
NOTE
Perform steps 7 and 8 on vehicles equipped with turn signal
canceling ring.
7.
Remove spring (12) from steering wheel shaft (3).
8.
Remove three screws (11), turn signal canceling ring 10), and steering wheel ring (9) from steering
wheel (1).
