hen a lead-acid battery, like the
ones used iN shelteRed telephoNe sys±
tems and nickel²cadmiuM batteRy, such
as aN A³/PPS´5 RadaR set's BBµ422
batteRy¶ get togetheR·watch out! They
neveR get aloNg.
Just oNe little whif oF lead´acid coN¸
tamination will Ruin a nickel´cadMium
batteRy. The mixiNg oF ¹mes May
cause an explosion.
So keep tHe NickelºcadMiuM bat»
teRies as FaR away as you caN ¼oM lead±
acid batteRies. SepaRate shops would
be supeR: but iF you doN't have sepaRate
sHops, use sepaRate beNches. Put the
benches at opposite eNds oF the battery
sHop, aND maRk eacH aRea cle½ly.
³eveR use the saMe tools oR MateRials
oN both types oF batteRies. That goes
¾R F¿ce shieLDs, apRoNs, gloves, optical
aNti¼eeze/batteRy testeRs, scRewdRiveRs
aNd wReNches.
To help Make suRe you keep 'em
apart, mÀRk tools aND MateRials used
oN NickelÁcaDMiuM batteRies with blue
paint anD those ¾R leadÂacid batteRies
with piÃK paiNt.
Äo keep ¼oM being splasHed with
electRolyte, always use a F¿ce shielD,
RUbbeR apRon, and RÅbbeR gloves wheN
woRkiNg oN batteRiEs.

Cleaning Of CorrosIon
ÊoR a thoRough cleaNiNg, pull out the
batteRies so you caN cleaË eveRy part.
ÌoR easy cleaniNg, you caN use liquid
solutioN to wash away Most coRRosion.
But it takes diÍFeRent kinds FOR diÍFeReNt
batteRies.
O¶ the lead·acid batteries,
mix

pound oF baÎing soda in a gallon oF
wateR. Ïse a scRub bRusH to clean the

Metal parts aND batteRies. Be suRe to
tighteN the batteRy FilleR caps so the
soLutioN woN't seep iNsiDe while you'Re
scrubbiNg. ÐiNse batteRies with pleNty
oF wateR aNd

them.
For ¶ickel·cadmium BatTeries,
use
a

cup oF Regular washing deteRgent
in a galloN oF wateR. Be¾Re you wash
the batteRies, sNug down the ÍilleR caps.
That keeps out diRt, coRRosion and
wateR. Wash the batteRies with a
sponge oR cloth. Ñinse with wateR and
dRy.
To cleaN stubboRN coRRosion, use a
nylon bRistle brush, not a wiRe bRush.
That may sHort out the batteRy.

Ïse a wiRe brush and clean all Rust
¼om Metal paRts .

Clean Pa¶s

Get Right down to the baRe metal.
Paint the baRe metal with the same kind
oF coating that is alReady oN the metal.
Clean the posts and clamps with the
battery teRMinal cleaneR.
