4-116. UPPER AND LOWER STEERING COLUMN MAINTENANCE (Contd)
1.
Install U-joint (8) on steering gear input shaft (5) with screw (4), new lockwasher (2), and nut (1).
2.
Install two clamp bushings (7) on upper steering column (8).
NOTE
Position horn contact brush next to firewall.
3.
Lower upper steering column (8) through hole in floorboard (20) and insert splined end of upper
steering column (8) into universal joint (16).
4.
Install upper steering column (8) on universal joint (10) with screw (17), new lockwasher (15), and
nut (14). Do not tighten nut (14).
NOTE
If installing a new steering column, mark clamp position on new
column the same an on on old column.
5.
Install upper steering column (8) on instrument panel (6) with upper support clamp (9) and two
screws (10). Ensure clamp (9) is positioned over clamp bushing (7) at marked position.
6.
Attach upper steering column (8) to firewall (18) with lower mounting clamp (11), two washers (18),
screws (12), and new locknuts (19).
7.
Tighten nut (14) 28-34 lb-ft (38-46 N•m),
