FIELD MAINTENANCE
TORQUE LIMITS
Scope
This appendix provides the general torque limits for fasteners used on the 6V53/6V53T Diesel Engines. Special
torque limits are indicated in the maintenance procedures for applicable components. These general torque limits
cannot be applied to fasteners that retain rubber components. The rubber components will be damaged before
the torque limit is reached.
This appendix lists the dry torque limits. Dry torque limits are used on fasteners that do not have lubricants
applied to the threads. No wet torques are given because all wet torques are listed in the maintenance procedure.
Refer to Table 1 for torques suitable for grade 5, 5.1, 7, and 8 fasteners. No grade 1 or 2 fasteners are used on
the 6V53/6V53T Diesel Engine Series.
How to Use the Torque Table
Measure the shaft diameter of the fastener and count the number of threads per inch. Under the heading thread
size, look down the column until you find the diameter and threads per inch of the fastener. Next, look across that
row and read the torque limit in lb-ft or N·m.
