Flexplate and flywheel housing removed (para. 4-43).
GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
MATERIALS/PARTS
Oil seal kit (Appendix D, Item 505)
Four lockwashers (Appendix D, Item 408)
Gasket (Appendix D, Item 190)
Drycleaning solvent (Appendix C, Item 71)
Rags (Appendix C, Item 58)
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do
not use near an open flame.
Keep fire extinguisher nearby when using
drycleaning solvent.
a. Removal
1.
Remove four screws (8), washers (9), and lockwashers (10) from rear cover (4) and oil pan (11).
Discard lockwashers (10).
2.
Remove eight screws (5), rear cover (4), and gasket (3) from engine block (1). Discard gasket (3).
3.
Remove rear oil seal (7) from rear cover (4). Discard rear oil seal (7).
b. Cleaning and Inspection
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near open
flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when solvents
are used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear protective
clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved container.
Failure to do this may result in injury or death to personnel and/or
damage to equipment.
1.
Clean sealing surface of crankshaft (2) with drycleaning solvent and dry with clean rag.
2.
Inspect crankshaft (2) for nicks, gouges, and stripped threads. Replace crankshaft (2) if nicked,
gouged, or threads are stripped.
3.
Inspect rear cover (4) for nicks and gouges. Replace rear cover (4) if nicked or gouged.
4.
Inspect exposed area of oil pan gasket (12) for damage. Replace oil pan gasket (12) (para. 4-47), if
damaged.
c. Installation
1.
Install new gasket (3) and rear cover (4) on engine block (1) with eight screws (5). Finger-tighten
screws (5).
2.
Install alignment tool on crankshaft (2) and rear cover (4). Ensure rear cover (4) is centered and
level with rails of oil pan (11).
3.
Tighten screws (5) 7 lb-ft (9 N·m) and remove alignment tool.
