EQUIPMENT CONDITION
Transmission (in-vehicle) removed (para. 4-71).
GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do
not use near an open flame.
Keep Are extinguisher nearby when using
drycleaning solvent.
a. Removal
1.
Using barring tool, prevent crankshaft (4) from turning.
2.
Remove eight screws (6), clamping ring (1), flexplate (2), and crankshaft adapter (3) from
crankshaft (4) and flywheel housing (5).
3.
Drill two 0.109-in. (2.77-mm) holes (7) in rear oil seal (8) on opposite sides.
4.
Using slide hammer and screw, and alternating from one hole (7) to the other, remove rear oil
seal (8) from crankshaft (4) and flywheel housing (5). Discard rear oil seal (8).
b. Cleaning and Inspection
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near open
flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when solvents
are used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear protective
clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved container.
Failure to do this may result in injury or death to personnel and/or
damage to equipment.
1.
Clean sealing surface of crankshaft (4) with drycleaning solvent and dry with clean rag.
2.
Inspect crankshaft (4) for nicks, burrs, and gouges. If excessively nicked, burred, or gouged, report
problem to General Support maintenance.
c. Installation
CAUTION
Ensure crankshaft and rear cover sealing surfaces are clean and
dry. Failure to do so may prevent proper sealing.
1.
Install pilot (9) in new rear oil seal (8) ensuring tapered end of pilot (9) and rear oil seal (8) face the
same direction.
