INSTRUCTION S
2-25. GENERAL.
This section provides
general repair methods and cleaning pro-
cedures. Special repair and cleaning pro-
cedures are provided, as required, in the in-
dividual maintenance instructions .
2-26. REPAIR METHODS .

Complete disassembly is not alway s
necessary to make a repair. Exercis e
good judgement to keep disassembly an d
reassembly to a minimum .
Repair or replace unserviceable parts an d
hardware. Always replace packings ,
gaskets, and seals with new parts .
Remove burrs with a stone or file. Re-
move burrs on closely fitted mating sur-
faces by lapping the surfaces with lap-
ping grinding compound (item 13, app x
C) .
Remove corrosion or rust with crocus
cloth (item 6, appx C) or emery clot h
(item 7, appx C). Use the method tha t
will not damage the surface bein g
cleaned. Crocus cloth (item 6, appx C)
should be used to remove corrosion an d
rust from polished surfaces. Make sur e
that critical dimensions are not altere d
when using crocus cloth .
Repair damaged threads with a threa d
chaser or die .
When welding is authorized, procedure s
in TM 9-237 must be followed. Weld s
must be inspected for cracks .
Bearings should be inspected and main-
tained following procedures in TM 9-214 .
Clean electrical ground contacts wit h
crocus cloth (item 6, appx C) or emery
cloth (item 7, appx C). Make sure groun d
connections are tight .
Repair chafed, broken, or damaged elec-
trical wiring with insulation tape (ite m
20, appx C). When soldering is required ,

procedures in TB SIG 222 must b e
followed .
After locating the malfunction and repair-
ing the component, test it for proper
function .
Follow torque values given throughou t
this manual. When no torque value is
given, follow the torque limits guide, pro-
vided in appendix E of this manual, t o
prevent damaging parts .
2-27. CLEANING .

Wire brush metal parts to remove rus t
and corrosion .
Dry cleaning solvent (SD2) is toxic
and flammable. Wear protectiv e
goggles and gloves and use only
in well-ventilated area .
Clean metal parts with dry cleaning sol-
vent (SD2) (item 10, appx C). Metal or
fiber brushes may be used to apply
cleaning solvent and to remove softene d
or dissolved material. Hand scraping wit h
metal scrapers may be used to remov e
soft coatings or deposits .
Soak oily or greasy metal parts in a tank
containing dry cleaning solvent (SD2)
(item 10, appx C). The time parts mus t
be in solvent varies with the type an d
amount of material to be removed .
Do not use solvent to clean electrical in-
sulation, wires, cables, or wirin g
harnesses. Clean these parts by wipin g
with a damp cloth. Use a mild soap solu-
tion if necessary. Dry immediately wit h
clean dry cloths. Clean contact points
with flint abrasive paper (item 1, appx
and dust thoroughly after cleaning .
