11-3. Through Shaft (Output Shaft) Removal and Disassembly.
a. Removal.
(1)
If the unit is in the vehicle, disconnect rear propeller shaft.
(2)
Remove the output shaft nut (fig. 11-3) yoke and washer. It may be necessary to use a yoke
puIler to remove the yoke from the shaft.
(3)
Remove output shaft bearing retainer (cage), capscrews and washers and puII the cage,
shaft, and bearing assembly from the axle housing.
To free the cage from the housing, it may be necessary
to tap the shaft and cage with a soft mallet. Care must be taken not to damage seal. Also, remove the
bearing cage to housing gasket.
b. Disassembly.
CAUTIO N
The spacer diameter must be less than the
outer diameter of the through-shaft to
avoid damaging the oil seal and bearings
in the next step.
